This week some of our pupils started a programme of volunteering with the Green Team, working outdoors on a conservation project. This week’s session was very much an introduction to the project and was located in a woodland on the eastern side of Edinburgh. Pupils were introduced to some of the tools that they will use over the coming weeks and explored how to light a fire with wet wood. Whilst the fire established itself pupils looked for a suitable stick and learned how to use a knife to safely whittle the stick into a marshmallow roasting implement – marshmallows were thus roasted!
By taking part pupils will gain the John Muir Award and, for those doing the Duke of Edinburgh award, this will count towards the volunteering element of the award.
